Remote fix HDD HS25YJZ

Question Asked: member name: Crysty

Can you fix remotely a Samsung S1 mini 250gb (hs25yjz/vpk) external Hdd?
The drive of S1 mini is running and when I connect to usb port, it start reading for few seconds and then enter in a loop for reading other sectors (the head is moving 2 times and then wait a lot of time).
Some time ago I fixed a Seagate hdd that had defective firmware using MX1A firmware provided by vendor. I'm thinking that is something similar now.

Before the drive stop working I follow the steps bellow:
- I used robocopy to copy from internal hdd to S1 mini usb hdd, but some files can't be checked on target drive
- I tried to delete files on target drive, but I can't
- I run chkdsk but I got error because chkdsk doesn't support raw drive like S1 mini.
- I force remove s1 mini and plug it again.

Windows event viewer shows the following errors:
- The IO operation at logical block address 3a380d7 for Disk 3 was retried.
- A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume F:.
The exact nature of the corruption is unknown. The file system structures need to be scanned and fixed offline.
- The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: SAMSUNG, DeviceName: DeviceHarddiskVolume30.
(A device which does not exist was specified.)
- {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.
- The device F: (location (unknown)) is offline due to a user-mode driver crash. Windows will attempt to restart the device 2 more times. Please contact the device manufacturer for more information about this problem.

Answer Answer:

Your storage looks like has a bad sectors. For recovery data from your case need to make sector-by-sector copy on the fully working HDD. Better do use direct interface (not USB) if it's possible for you. For do that need to solder some cables to CPU.

All damaged, unreadable areas, need to skip. Possible, while copying you will understand about the reasons of bad blocks is broken heads. In that case need to build heads map (table of logical sectors assign to physical sectors) and read all data except damaged head, swap heads and read left data.

After that you can use some kind of data recovery software for working with image and recovery all data to the destination. Do it remotely, obviously, impossible.
